A Two-Horse Race With Four Days Still to Run. Sixteen Goals, Fifteen to Two Teams: Rela Hospital THL Women's League.

Three matches in, the THL Women's League has given us hat-tricks, clean sheets, and a couple of genuinely good hockey teams. It has also given us an 8–0, a 4–0, and a competition that looks like it was decided before it started. Halfway through the six-game schedule, this is less a league table than a queue: two teams at the front, two teams a long way back, and one match — the last one — that actually means anything.
Let's be honest about what we've watched.

Sixteen goals in three games sounds like a festival of attacking hockey. It isn't. Fifteen of those sixteen goals have been scored by SHE Chennai and SRM IST. The two SDAT sides — Pudukottai and Tiruvannamalai — have managed one goal between them across a combined three matches, and conceded fifteen. Two of the three "Star of the Match" awards have gone to goalkeepers on the losing side, which is the politest possible way of saying the best individual performances in this tournament so far have been damage limitation.
The table — and why it may already be over

SHE and SRM have nine points and a combined +14 goal difference between them. Pudukottai and Tiruvannamalai have zero points and a combined −14. Neither SDAT side has led for a single minute of this tournament. With three rounds gone, the only mathematically live question at the top is which of the two strong teams finishes first — and they don't even meet until the final day.
The numbers that indict the format
Four teams. Six matches. Seven days. That is a schedule with almost no margin for a bad afternoon and no mechanism to correct a lopsided draw.
The fixture list front-loaded every mismatch. W1: the strongest attack (SRM) against the weakest defence (Pudukottai). W2: the joint-best (SHE) against Tiruvannamalai. W3: SHE against Pudukottai again. The two good teams have spent the first half of the tournament playing the two that can't live with them, and the scorelines have said so.
The one match anyone should want to see — SRM IST v SHE Chennai — is scheduled last (W6, 12 September), almost as an afterthought. It is, on current evidence, the entire competition compressed into sixty minutes. Everything before it has been a warm-up.
A 5.3 goals-per-game average that tells you nothing, because it's an average of two demolitions and one routine win, not three contests.
Where the credit is due
SRM IST were ruthless in W1 — a Suba Sri hat-trick (two field goals and a corner) and a Vairavi M hat-trick in the same game, 8–0, not a goal conceded. On that evidence they are the best team here.
SHE Chennai have been the more complete side: two wins, one goal conceded, and — crucially — five different scorers across two games. They don't lean on one player.
M Jothilakshmi (SHE) is the only player to have scored in every match her team has played: a penalty corner in W2, a field goal in W3.
The two SDAT goalkeepers, V. Tesha Sri and Mathusri V, have been the most sympathetic figures in the tournament — busy, brave, and beaten by better teams.

Here, at last, is a fair fight — because it's the first women's match where both teams walk out level: zero points, zero wins, nothing to lose but last place.

The critical read: this is the wooden-spoon eliminator. Whoever loses cannot catch SHE or SRM and is effectively playing out the string. Whoever wins gets their first points of the tournament and, more importantly, evidence that they belong on the same pitch as the top two.
What to watch: the only goal either of these teams has scored all tournament was Gopika's for Pudukottai in W3 — so this could genuinely be tight, low-scoring, decided by one moment. But both defences have looked fragile enough that an early goal could just as easily become a landslide. Given how quickly W1 and W2 got away from these sides, the first fifteen minutes matter more here than in any game so far. And with two shot-stoppers who've already been the standout players on losing days, don't be surprised if this one hinges on whichever keeper has the quieter afternoon.

The THL Women's League has produced two teams worth watching and a format that hasn't given them anyone to test them yet. Saturday's SRM–SHE decider should be excellent. Everything up to it has been a reminder that four teams and six games is a tournament with no room for error and no answer to a top-heavy draw. Today's W4 won't fix the balance problem — but it might, finally, give us a women's match where nobody knows the score before the whistle.
Finals Day: Saturday 12 September Is a Double-Header for Two Trophies

Forget the fixture list's polite little labels. Saturday is not "Women's Matchday 6" and then a men's final. Saturday is THL Finals Day — two title matches, one afternoon into one floodlit evening, and both of them winner-takes-all.

Why the women's game is a final in everything but name
It has quietly arranged itself into the cleanest possible decider. SRM IST and SHE Chennai are the only two teams in the competition yet to lose. They have not conceded a goal to anybody who matters. And by the fixture's own design, they meet in the last game either of them plays — no third party, no safety net, no "we'll get them next week."
SHE Chennai: two wins from two, seven scored, one conceded, five different goalscorers. The more complete team.
SRM IST: one game, one 8–0, two hat-tricks in the same afternoon (Suba Sri S, Vairavi M), not a goal against. The more frightening team.
Barring a shock in Friday's W5, both arrive on six points with a spotless record, and Saturday at 3:30 settles it: win and you are champions. A draw likely hands SRM the trophy on goal difference, which means SHE walk out knowing only a victory will do. That is a final. It deserves the billing, the crowd, and the noise — the same billing the men's game gets at 5:30.
