THL 2026 · Match Preview — Indian Overseas Bank v Southern Railway · Thursday 10 September, 17:30, under floodlights, SDAT Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Egmore. Win and you walk into Saturday's Final against Sports Hostel of Excellence. Lose, and your tournament is finished on the spot. Two teams arrive at that door from opposite ends of the corridor: Indian Overseas Bank, who have not lost a match in regulation all season and are somehow still here; and Southern Railway, who were bottom of the Super Six after two games and have not stopped winning since.
One of them is playing in the Final. The other is going home.

These two have crossed paths exactly once in THL 2026, and it was tight in a way neither team's other games were.
Southern Railway struck first. Shanmugam P, twelfth minute, a field goal, and the seed of an upset. It stayed that way deep into the second half until Indian Overseas Bank did what Indian Overseas Bank do: B N Chelsea Medappa buried a penalty corner in the 32nd minute, Deepak Pradhan finished from open play in the 48th, and the No. 1 seed edged out of Egmore with a 2–1 win — their lowest-scoring victory of the Super Six.
The twist: the Star of the Match went to a losing player. Suraj (30) of Southern Railway was so good in defeat that the award crossed the halfway line. The template was written that night — Railway can hurt IOB early; IOB's set-piece depth and second-half composure win it late. The question on Thursday is whether that template still holds, because both teams have changed since.

The case for them
They are the benchmark and they have the receipts. IOB have topped every table they have been in — Pool B, then the Super Six — and have gone eleven matches without a regulation defeat. Their defence is the best in the tournament: eight conceded in the league, eight in the Super Six, a goal difference of +23 that dwarfs everyone left standing. And they carry two of the top four names in the Golden Stick race — Dilraj Singh on 14, Patras Tirkey on 10 — which means the threat comes from open play and from the top of the circle. Two of the Super Six's three hat-tricks were struck in an IOB shirt.
The case against them
One word: shoot-outs. IOB have been to three, won one, and lost the last two — and each loss has cost them dearly. A defeat to ICF in SS9 cost a bonus point; the defeat to Sports Hostel in Qualifier 1 cost a place in the Final. If Thursday is level after sixty minutes, the form book says look away. Add to that a solitary clean sheet in eleven games — this is a team that wins by outscoring you, not by shutting you out — and three days of inactivity against an opponent who played 48 hours ago. The No. 1 seed expected to be putting its feet up this week. Instead it is in a knockout it never planned for, still stinging.
Impact players
Dilraj Singh — the closer. Nine field goals, five penalty strokes, ice in the veins from the spot. If IOB get a stroke, the game is half won.
Patras Tirkey — the drag-flick and the corner battery. A hat-trick of penalty corners in SS1 tells you what he can do if Railway give away set pieces.
B N Chelsea Medappa & Deepak Pradhan — the men who turned the last meeting. Both scored that night; both are still doing it.
How they've matured
Early on, IOB won by landslide — 4–0, 6–1, 8–4. Through the Super Six they learned a harder skill: winning ugly. A 2–1 grind past Railway, a salvaged 1–1 against Sports Hostel, a 2–2 they dragged out of ICF. They stopped needing to be brilliant and started knowing how to be enough. The one lesson they have not learned is the shoot-out — and it has now bitten them twice.
Southern Railway
The case for them
Momentum, and plenty of it. W-D-W-W, unbeaten in four, sixteen goals in their last six games. They are the sharpest team in the competition because they are the only one who played this week — Tuesday's 6–5 Eliminator was chaos, but it was also ninety minutes of match rhythm and a win in the legs. Shanmugam P is in the form of his career: ten goals, on the scoresheet in five of Railway's recent games, the man they look for when it's tight. Behind him, goalkeeper M G Suresh was Star of the Match in the 4–3 win over Indian Bank. And crucially, Railway have no pressure. They were bottom of the six after two matches. Every round since has been house money. The weight is entirely on IOB's shoulders.
The case against them
They leak. Thirty-one conceded across the tournament, thirteen in the Super Six — the worst of the top three — and fivein the Eliminator. Against a Dilraj Singh–Patras Tirkey attack, that is the number that keeps the coach awake. Their Super Six goal difference was negative, and the honest read is that shoot-outs and fine margins have flattered a mid-table team. When Railway have met a genuine heavyweight in this tournament, they have lost — 2–7 to Sports Hostel, 1–2 to IOB. They have beaten the teams beneath them, not above. And the short turnaround cuts both ways: rhythm, yes, but also tired legs after an eleven-goal night.
Impact players
Shanmugam P — the talisman. Field goals, strokes, penalty corners; he scores in every phase and every situation. Stop him and you go a long way to stopping Railway.
Harjith Singh — the sneaky forward is lying low in the second half of the league but a sure nightmare for IOB defence.
M G Suresh — the goalkeeper who has kept Railway in games they had no business staying in. If this one is a shoot-out, remember: Railway are 1–0 in them, and he's the reason.
Gobind Patel — the Eliminator's Star of the Match, the man for the goal that settles nerves.
Dinesh Kumar C — three goals, all penalty corners. Railway's own set-piece answer.
How they've matured
This is the clearest growth story in THL 2026. Bottom of the Super Six, looking like the weakest of the six teams. Then, in order: a 2–0 win with a clean sheet over AGORC (they learned discipline); a shoot-out won against ICF (composure); a 4–3 thriller taken from Indian Bank (character); and a 6–5 Eliminator outlasting AGORC again (belief). A team that got run over by the big sides in late August is now a team that finds a way in September. Shanmugam has grown into the leader. The defence has learned to protect a lead — even if, on Tuesday's evidence, it can't always.

Both of these teams have been dragged to a shoot-out in a knockout-type situation this month. One survived it. The other didn't. If Qualifier 2 is level at the hooter, that table is the whole story.
What to watch
The first fifteen minutes. Last time, Railway scored inside twelve. If they land the first punch again, IOB — carrying a Q1 hangover and three days of rust — have to chase, and chasing is not their comfort zone.
Penalty corners. Both teams live off them. Tirkey and Chelsea Medappa for IOB; Dinesh Kumar C and Shanmugam for Railway. Whoever defends the top of the circle better probably wins.
Dilraj Singh v the Railway back line. He has 14 goals and five of them are strokes. Railway concede pressure and fouls in the D. That is a dangerous combination for them.

For Indian Overseas Bank, this is not just a knockout — it is unfinished business on their own patch. Last time out they went all the way to the final and came up short, runners-up in front of their own Chennai crowd, close enough to touch the trophy and not close enough to lift it. Everything about this season was built to correct that: top of Pool B, top of the Super Six, unbeaten in eleven matches of regulation hockey. And yet here they are, back at Egmore, back under the lights, in a Qualifier 2 they never intended to play — dropped into a do-or-die by a shoot-out that got away in Qualifier 1. The home support that watched them fall short last year is the same support that will fill the stands on Thursday. IOB do not need reminding what a lost final feels like in this stadium. They have ninety minutes to make sure it does not happen twice.
