The Rela Hospital Tamil Hockey League 2026 witnessed another evening of thrilling hockey as Southern Railway produced a dramatic last-minute comeback against defending champions Indian Bank, while Sports Hostel of Excellence continued their unbeaten march at the top of Pool A.
In a day filled with speed, skill and intense competition, P. Shanmugam turned redemption into heroics, scoring twice in the final moments to seal a memorable Railway victory. Meanwhile, Sports Hostel of Excellence extended their perfect start to four wins from four matches after overcoming a determined Income Tax side.
MATCH 20: SOUTHERN RAILWAY 3–2 INDIAN BANK
Shanmugam’s Redemption Seals Railway’s Stunning Comeback
Defending champions Indian Bank began their Tamil Hockey League 2026 campaign strongly, but Southern Railway produced a sensational late turnaround to secure a 3–2 victory in a match that kept the Egmore crowd on the edge of their seats.
Indian Bank started brightly, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Tejas Chavan’s field goal.
Southern Railway responded quickly, with Gobind Patel equalising in the ninth minute.
The second quarter remained goalless before Indian Bank regained the lead through Bilkan Oram’s penalty-corner conversion in the 36th minute.
The defending champions controlled much of the contest, but Southern Railway showed tremendous resilience and refused to let the match slip away.
The defining moment belonged to P. Shanmugam.
In their previous encounter, Shanmugam had missed a crucial penalty stroke which eventually cost Southern Railway the game. This time, when another high-pressure opportunity arrived, he stood up for his team.
Shanmugam converted a penalty stroke in the 59th minute to level the match and, within a minute, produced the winning strike with a field goal in the 60th minute.
From disappointment to match-winner Shanmugam scripted one of the tournament’s most memorable individual stories and took home his second Star of the match trophy.

MATCH 21: SPORTS HOSTEL OF EXCELLENCE 4–2 INCOME TAX
Sports Hostel Maintain Perfect Start as Income Tax Fight Until the End
Sports Hostel of Excellence continued their outstanding run in Pool A with a hard-fought 4–2 victory over Income Tax, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches.
The match brought together two contrasting strengths — the youthful energy and pace of Sports Hostel against the experience and structure of Income Tax.
Sports Hostel opened the scoring through S. Krishnan, who converted a penalty corner in the 14th minute.
Income Tax responded through S. Karthi, who levelled the match with a penalty corner in the 18th minute.
The intensity continued after the break. K Gowtham restored Sports Hostel’s lead with a field goal in the 35th minute, but Income Tax immediately answered through Nambi Ganesan’s penalty corner conversion in the 36th minute.
At 2–2, the contest was finely balanced.
Sports Hostel’s organisation and attacking movement eventually made the difference. S. Krishnan scored his second penalty corner goal in the 45th minute, before N Aravind added another field goal in the 48th minute to seal a 4–2 victory.
Income Tax fought hard throughout and showed glimpses of their quality, especially with the arrival of Indian international Karthi Selvam, who joined the squad alongside S. Mareeswaran.
Karthi Selvam’s journey is a proud story for Tamil Nadu hockey. Having emerged through the Sports Hostel of Excellence, the same institution that produced several top players, he has gone on to represent India at the international level. His presence adds valuable experience and inspiration to the Income Tax squad as the league enters its decisive phase.
For the young players watching THL, his journey represents the pathway from local hockey grounds to the national jersey.

The encouraging trend off the field has been the growing turnout at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, with spectator numbers increasing over the past three days.
Matches such as today's two encounters — decided by determination, pace and attacking hockey — are providing the kind of spectacle that can bring supporters back to the stands.
There is also more encouragement for the tournament's emerging talent.
Mr Thangaraj,of the Chennai Fans Association (CFA), has come forward to sponsor a ₹5,000 cash award for an upcoming and promising youngster of the Tamil Hockey League.
The Chennai Fans Association had similarly sponsored and honoured a player during the previous TPL 3 edition, continuing its support for emerging hockey talent.
