Day 7 of the Tamil Hockey League produced 17 goals across two matches, but the numbers tell only part of the story.

Southern Railway strengthened their campaign with a convincing 5–2 victory over GST & Central Excise, before Income Tax delivered one of the most emphatic performances of the league so far, sweeping aside SM Nagar 8–2.

With the competition moving into another crucial week, the pools are beginning to take shape — and every point, every goal and increasingly, every goal difference could matter.

SOUTHERN RAILWAY 5–2 GST & CENTRAL EXCISE

The opening quarter gave little indication of what was to follow.

Two evenly matched sides cancelled each other out through the first 15 minutes, but once Southern Railway found their rhythm, the match changed.

P. Shanmugam opened the scoring for Southern Railway before Harjeet Singh struck twice. Suraj and Ramanathan added to the tally as Railway eventually pulled away to a 5–2 victory.

GST & Central Excise stayed in the contest through two goals from Patras Hassa and continued to threaten, but Southern Railway’s superior coordination and ability to convert their opportunities ultimately separated the teams.

The 5–2 result was less about domination from start to finish and more about Southern Railway being decisive when the game opened up.

INCOME TAX 8–2 SM NAGAR

If the first match developed gradually, the second exploded almost immediately.

Income Tax scored four times in the opening quarter and never relinquished control.

At the centre of it was Nambi Ganesan.

Three penalty-corner goals and a penalty stroke gave him four goals for the match, a performance that not only powered Income Tax to an 8–2 victory but also has major implications for the Golden Stick race.

Hariharan added a field goal, while R. Manikandan contributed from both a penalty corner and open play. M. Subash completed the scoring for Income Tax.

SM Nagar responded through Viswa from open play and Dilli Babu from a penalty corner, but they were unable to match Income Tax’s organisation and efficiency.

There were moments when SM Nagar’s young side showed what it can become. But against an Income Tax team controlling the pace and reading the game intelligently, moments were not enough.

THE POOLS ARE BEGINNING TO MATTER

Seven days into the competition, the league is entering a different phase.

The opening matches tell us who has arrived in form. The next stretch will tell us who can sustain it.

Income Tax’s eight-goal performance is particularly significant because league hockey is not played only on the scoreboard in front of you.

As teams become separated by increasingly fine margins, points and goal difference begin to acquire their own pressure.

Southern Railway’s five goals therefore matter beyond Sunday’s victory.

So do Income Tax’s eight.

Southern Railway sit top, but there is little daylight between the leading three.

Income Tax are level on six points.

Sports Hostel also have six — from only two games.

And Indian Bank are yet to begin their campaign.

Pool A is nowhere near settled.

Indian Overseas Bank currently set the pace in Pool B with seven points.

But the table is deceptive.

ICF and Pattabiram Strikers have played only once each.

Their next matches could change the complexion of the pool quickly.

THE GOLDEN STICK RACE JUST GOT INTERESTING

Four goals in one evening can transform a goalscoring race.

Nambi Ganesan’s performance against SM Nagar puts his name firmly into the Golden Stick conversation, while players such as Harjeet Singh continue to add to their tournament tally.

As the league progresses, penalty-corner specialists and open-play scorers will increasingly become decisive — not merely in the individual award race, but in deciding which teams survive the pool stage.

The Golden Stick may be an individual honour.

But almost every contender will tell you the same thing:

Goals matter most when they move your team up the table.

TODAY — POOL B TAKES CENTRE STAGE

The focus shifts entirely to Pool B on Monday, 17 August.

At 2:30 PM, Integral Coach Factory take on Dhyand Veerans.

ICF arrive after an impressive 4–2 win over AGORC, while Dhyand Veerans are still searching for their first points of the competition.

At 4:00 PM, AGORC face Pattabiram Strikers.

AGORC need a response after two defeats from three matches. Pattabiram, meanwhile, have started with a win and have the opportunity to make their early position count.

Those two matches could make Pool B look very different by the end of the evening.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK

This is where the Tamil Hockey League should begin to tighten.

Teams have now had time to understand their combinations.

Coaches have seen their strengths exposed and their weaknesses too.

Opponents have enough information to begin planning specifically for one another.

Expect matches to become more tactical.

Expect penalty corners to become increasingly valuable.

Expect teams sitting outside the qualification positions to take greater risks.

And expect the pressure on the leading teams to grow.

The question is no longer simply:

Who can play good hockey?

It is: Who can keep doing it when the table starts asking questions?

The next week may give us the answer.
