Some days the Egmore turf just decides to give you everything at once. Tuesday was one of them. In the afternoon, SHE Chennai quietly went about the business of winning a title race, three different names on the scoresheet and a goalkeeper at the other end earning the applause. Then the light dropped, the Eliminator threw off, and Southern Railway and AGORC Chennai produced the highest-scoring match of the entire tournament bar one — eleven goals, a hat-trick of drag-flicks in a losing cause, and a season that ended with the scoreboard still reading five.


THE ELIMINATOR: Southern Railway 6–5 AGORC Chennai

Six, five, and still standing

For fifty-five minutes this was not a hockey match so much as a negotiation that kept breaking down. AGORC Chennai led. Then they didn't. Then they led again. Southern Railway trailed at the hooter for the first quarter, trailed at half-time, and still found a way to walk off into Qualifier 2 while the fourth seed walked off into the off-season.

It started the way AGORC's whole Super Six went — Chiran Medappa, a penalty corner, the ball in the net before anyone had settled. 7th minute, 0–1. By the time Manoj Kumar levelled it in the 17th and Shanmugam P nudged Railway ahead three minutes later, you could feel the game deciding it wasn't going to be that kind of night. Medappa answered with two more corners inside sixty seconds around the half-hour — 29', 30', a hat-trick, all three off the flick — and AGORC took a 3–2 lead into the long break.

That was the last time they were in front.

Southern Railway came out for the third quarter and scored three times in seven minutes: Shanmugam from the stroke (33'), Harjeet Singh from open play (35'), Ramanathan off a corner (40'). Veerathamizhan kept AGORC breathing with his first (38') and, much later, his second (55') — but by then Gobind Patel had struck the goal that mattered, a 51st-minute field goal that pushed the margin back to two and, as it turned out, put the game out of reach. AGORC threw everything at the last five minutes and got one back. They needed two.

Railway's redemption tour rolls on. Bottom of the Super Six after two games. Third by the end of it. A 4–3 escape against Indian Bank. And now this. They have beaten AGORC Chennai twice in this tournament — a 2–0 shutout in the group, and a 6–5 riot in the knockouts — and the two results could not have looked less alike.

Star of the Match — Gobind Patel (34), Southern Railway. Not the loudest name on the sheet, but the 51st-minute finish that made it 6–4 was the one Railway could not have done without — the difference between "held on" and "went to a shoot-out."


The stat that stings

Chiran Medappa scored a hat-trick and lost. Three penalty corners, ruthless from the top of the circle, and it took his tournament tally from 11 to 14 — level at the very top of the Golden Stick race with Dilraj Singh and S. Krishnan.The cruelty is that AGORC are out. Barring a return in a future season, Medappa's Golden Stick campaign may be frozen on 14, in a shirt that won't play again this year.

THL WOMEN'S LEAGUE: SHE Chennai 3–1 SDAT Pudukottai

Two from two, and a keeper who wouldn't break

While the men's knockout was busy setting fireworks off, SHE Chennai were doing the unglamorous, title-winning thing: taking care of business without ever quite putting their foot on the throat.

They beat SDAT Tiruvannamalai 4–0 on the opening day. Here they beat SDAT Pudukottai 3–1, and the margin flattered neither side. M J Jovina Defny, M Jothilakshmi and V Kaviya all found the net — three different scorers in three different ways, which is exactly the profile of a team that is hard to plan against. Jothilakshmi's goal made her the only player in the competition to have scored in every match her team has played: a penalty corner against Tiruvannamalai, a field goal here.

Pudukottai, though, will leave with something. R Gopika's finish was their first goal of the tournament a small mercy after an 0–8 opening defeat to SRM IST — and their goalkeeper, V. Tesha Sri, was the reason 3–1 didn't become something uglier. She took the Star of the Match award in a losing side, which tells you how the afternoon actually went.

Rest Day — 9 September

After eleven goals in one Eliminator, the SDAT Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium is taking Wednesday off, and frankly it has earned it. The scoreboard operator gets to ice a wrist. The turf gets a day without a drag-flick landing on it every ninety seconds. Chiran Medappa's hat-trick ball, wherever it is, gets to sit still. Somewhere Southern Railway's physios are quietly grateful nobody has to move faster than a walk to the tea urn, and Indian Overseas Bank get twenty-four hours to decide whether losing a shoot-out was a setback or a running start. Sports Hostel of Excellence, already in the Final, get to do the smuggest thing in sport: nothing at all, on purpose. Enjoy the quiet — it's the last of it. Thursday the lights come on, W4 kicks off at half past three, and Qualifier 2 will settle who joins SHE for the title. One day of calm, then Egmore turns the volume back up.
