Railway's Resurrection. A rescheduled shoot-out, a 4–3 thriller, and Southern Railway climb from last to third in Rela Hospital Tamil Hockey League

Ten days ago, Southern Railway had played two Super Six matches and lost both, scoring three and conceding nine. On Friday afternoon, in the space of two hours, they went from the bottom of the group to a semi-final place. First they finished off a shoot-out that bad light had left hanging for 24 hours; then they won a 4–3 shoot-out of a hockey match against the defending champions. The Railway are third, and the race for the last two knockout spots has been blown open.


SS12: the shoot-out that took two days

Southern Railway 1–1 Integral Coach Factory had been level and unfinished when the floodlights lost the fight with the dusk on Wednesday. Shanmugam P's penalty stroke had cancelled out Dhanush's field goal, and the shoot-out was pushed to Thursday's — sorry, Friday's — 2 p.m. slot.

When it came, Southern Railway won it 4–2, and with it the bonus point that lifted them off the bottom of the group and level with Integral Coach Factory. ICF's Shyam Kumar (#23), who had done nothing wrong across 60 minutes but shockingly missed the shoot-out and dramatic penalty stroke thereafter, took the individual award — a small consolation on an afternoon that would get worse for his side.


SS13: Southern Railway 4–3 Indian Bank

The nightcap was chaos, and Southern Railway held their nerve better.

Dinesh Kumar C's two penalty corners and a field goal apiece from Mahendra and the ever-present Shanmugam P were enough to see off an Indian Bank side that, true to its Super Six, scored freely and defended nothing.

Star of the Match went to Suresh, the Southern Railway goalkeeper, who kept the door shut often enough in the closing exchanges to protect a one-goal lead and he was also a star in the shootouts 2 hours earlier in the afternoon. Southern Railways are now becoming dangerous in the final minutes a watch out stratregy for others who wouldn't take them lightly.

For Indian Bank it was a fifth defeat in five — a goal in every game, 11 scored, 19 conceded, and a Super Six campaign that ends where it spent most of its time: bottom. The champions are out.

Southern Railway and Indian Bank have completed their five matches. Remaining:

Top-four maths: two in, one waiting, two fighting

Only two matches are left, so the picture is close to resolved.

Sports Hostel of Excellence and Indian Overseas Bank are through.

Both are unbeaten on nine, and no combination of Saturday's results can push either out of the top four. The ICF and AGORC games decide only whether Sports Hostel or Indian Overseas Bank finishes first — they are level, Sports Hostel ahead on goal difference (+6 to +5), and are waiting to play in the playoffs.


Southern Railway (8 points, finished) are in the box seat for third — and they can only watch. Railway drop out of the top four only if both AGORC and Integral Coach Factory win their final games. And for Integral Coach Factory, "win their final game" means beating the runaway group leaders. It is the narrowest of escape hatches.


AGORC Chennai (7) hold their own fate. A single point off Indian Overseas Bank — even a shoot-out point after a draw and they are almost certainly into the play-offs. Lose to IOB, and they need Integral Coach Factory to fail against Sports Hostel to survive.


Integral Coach Factory (6) need a scalp. Only an outright win over Sports Hostel keeps them alive, and even then they need AGORC to slip against IOB. The problem is written into their record: three of their four Super Six matches have been draws. The draw specialists have to find a win, against the best team in the group, on the last day.


Most likely finish: 1. Sports Hostel of Excellence · 2. Indian Overseas Bank · 3. Southern Railway · 4. AGORC Chennai — with Integral Coach Factory the ones left to rue a month of stalemates.

Krishnan hasn't scored since SS11, and nobody has caught him. Friday's movers were Shanmugam P — the SS12 stroke plus an SS13 field goal — and B. Sathish, whose brace in defeat took him to eight. The award is not yet settled: Dilraj Singh (11) and Chiran Medappa (10) both play SS15, Pruthvi and Krishnan both play SS14. One routine hat-trick from the leader on Saturday and he is clear on sixteen.

The stage that opened with 5.4 goals a game across the first seven matches has slowed to 4.6 across thirteen — and open play has moved clearly ahead of the drag-flick, 29 field goals to 26 penalty corners, as defences have learned to smother the set-piece men.


And the through-line of the whole week: Southern Railway's arc. Zero points from SS2 and SS4. Eight from SS8, SS12 and SS13. From last place to a semi-final seat in seven days — and now the hardest part, sitting still on Saturday while two other teams decide whether the comeback is complete.
