IOB Survive the Railway Storm and Book Their Final Return in Rela Hospital Tamil Hockey League.

The preview on this site set Qualifier 2 up as a meeting of the tournament's benchmark and the tournament's form team — and it said the whole thing would turn on the first quarter of an hour. "Last time, Railway scored inside twelve. If they land the first punch again, IOB have to chase, and chasing is not their comfort zone."

Southern Railway landed it. Manoj Kumar, tenth minute, a cheeky flick - field goal, dead on schedule. Railway were ahead, the floodlights were up, the gallery was roaring, and their remarkable September was still very much alive.

Then Indian Overseas Bank did what the best side in this competition does. They didn't chase. They didn't panic. They just went to work.


The response

There's a line in that preview about how IOB stopped needing to be brilliant and learned instead how to be enough. Qualifier 2 was that idea across sixty minutes of hockey.

Seven minutes later Dilraj Singh, the man the preview flagged as the danger to a Railway defence that concedes pressure and fouls in the D, took a half-chance in his stride and made it 2–1. From there IOB did not so much dominate as manage — keeping the ball, keeping their shape, keeping Southern Railway at arm's length. It was 2–1 at three-quarter time and it felt, if anything, more settled than the scoreline.

The one number IOB still couldn't shake was that they hadn't kept a clean sheet all tournament, and they didn't keep one here. But they only ever needed to hold Railway to that early goal — and they did.

The last three minutes

For fifty-seven minutes this had been a controlled 2–1. Then Southern Railway threw everything forward, and the final act arrived in a rush.

Shanmugam P — the man the preview named as the one Railway player IOB had to stop — stood over a penalty corner with the tie hanging on it, and hit the post. An inch inside it and this is 2–2 and a completely different report.

From the rebound and the scramble, Railway had a penalty stroke — the equaliser handed to them on a tee. It went to the video umpire. Long look. Overturned. No stroke. And the momentum that had been entirely orange for two frantic minutes swung straight back to blue.

IOB broke. A raking aerial ball out of their own half, taken cleanly on the turn, and Sumit Kindo finished it in the last seconds for 3–1. No hooter drama, no shoot-out, no chance for the sub-plot the preview had been most wary of — "if Qualifier 2 is level at the hooter, that table is the whole story," because Railway are unbeaten in shoot-outs and IOB have lost their last two. It never got there. IOB made sure of that.

Southern Railway leave the knockouts with their heads high. Bottom of the Super Six after two games, they won five of their next six to get within one match of the final — a run as good as any in this tournament. On the night, IOB simply had that bit more in the key moments, as the very top sides have tended to against Railway all season. It is a fine line, and it fell IOB's way.

This was the first men's knockout played fully under the Egmore floodlights, and the stand played its part — a full, loud, unapologetically partisan house. A little too unapologetic in places: there were scuffles in the gallery, supporters of both sides running their own contests while the one on the pitch played out. Free entry fills the ground; a floodlit knockout gives it an edge. The organisers will be hoping for a warmer house, and a cooler one, on Saturday.

Dilraj Singh's 31st-minute strike was his 15th of THL 2026, and it broke a three-way tie at the top. His two closest challengers went into the night on 14 apiece — and are now split by the same thing: Chiran Medappa (14) is out with AGORC, while S. Krishnan (14) is in the Final with Sports Hostel of Excellence.

So the race is still open. Krishnan needs two on Saturday to overtake Dilraj, one to draw level. Patras Tirkey (10) is out there for IOB as well. In all likelihood the Golden Stick is decided in the same sixty minutes as the trophy.

Finals Day

It is a rematch, and IOB have a score to settle. Qualifier 1 was Sports Hostel of Excellence 2–2 Indian Overseas Bank, SHE 4–3 on the shoot-out — SHE walked into the Final, IOB took the longer road through Southern Railway and arrived anyway. Now the two meet again, for the title.
